Academic bachelor study programme “Bible Art”, code 43215 (Iconography, Scriptology, Calligraphy, Graphics, Visual Arts)

In August 2024 European Christian Academy has signed contract with foreign agency that is fully accredited member of EQAR (European Quality Assurance Register) for accreditation of the study programme.

Offering academic education in Biblical art, Church art and Icon painting, the study programme works for research in conceptually new direction – that of Iconography and Church art in general. The programme develops Latvian icon painting school based on canonical Orthodox Church tradition. Programme provides Bachelor Degree of Humanities in Arts.

This is the only academic study program for Icon painting in Europe with specialization in Altar painting, sacred graphics, calligraphy. Students receive opportunity to improve their skills in the Orthodox Academy of Crete and monasteries in Holy Land. Also unique module of textology studies (ancient schrifts) led by visiting professor George van Durtanossky (Germany, Macedonia) is integrated. Graduates from the program are employed by churches in Greece, Israel, Crete and, of course, in Latvia. They have successfully won competitions and have taken part in painting of frescoes in Nazareth, Israel.

Essential for the concept of the study program was participation of our teachers and students in archeological excavation in Israel in cooperation with the Rockefeller Museum, Israel, and Finnish Theological Institute, Finland.

This is the only study programme in Europe serving as methodological foundation for analysis of social processes, thus strengthening social policy platform in European countries.

The Academic Study Programme “Theology” provides Bachelor Degree of Humanities in Theology and Religion Science.

Professional bachelor study programme “Caritative Social Work”, code 42762

Positive assessment and international accreditation of the study branch “Social welfare” and all its Bachelor and Master programs is accomplished. Also this program is accredited.

Study programme director: prof. Skaidrīte Gūtmane.

The study programme is rooted in the European historical anthropological model and European Social Agenda. Its core values are:

  1. Critical thinking,
  2. Inclusion,
  3. Solidarity,
  4. Creativity,
  5. Non-stop learning and development.

Caritative or client-oriented social work study program teach students how to improve the wellbeing and life-quality of vulnerable groups like children, youths, homeless people or minorities. Social work studies employ theories from Sociology, Education, but the main knowledge comes from Judeo-Christian and patristic anthropology, as well as knowledge of European Social Agenda. Students learn how to support, people in need of help and how to empower them to take action and solve personal problems they face.

The study programme is evaluated as having innovative methodology – promoting phenomena of charity into Social work education. The programme was discussed with Pope Francis in His Apostolic palace (Vatican, Rome) in June 4, 2016. It is one of a kind in Europe.

The goal of the study programme is to secure professional knowledge and practical skills adapted to social needs of the State and it is based on traditions of Christian ministry and service (caritas). The programme is aimed at specialists in professional work in both State and local institutions as well as in Christian institutions and NGOs. Acquisition of the ascribed knowledge guarantees professionalism fit to the contents of the European social model based and following traditions of Christian stewardship.
Courses in social sciences are offered (sociology, social policy, pedagogy, psychology, economics) permitting analysis of interaction between society and individual. Wide spectrum of interdisciplinary knowledge is given for ability to seek for innovative solutions when working with cases and research; knowledge on variable social and caritative technologies for stabilization of social cohesion; exhaustive and diverse field work options to acquire diagnostic, methodical, social, and analytical skills; critical analysis of various approaches and schools in the field of social work.

  • Study duration: 2 years (full time) or 2,5 years (part time).
  • Volume: 80 crp.
  • Study type: full time (evening), part time extramural (1 week p/month). E-learning available.
  • Requirements: 1st or 2nd level professional higher education in social sciences, humanities or health sciences, or higher 2nd level professional education.
  • Qualification awarded: social worker.
